Cops: Stop signs damaged by drunken students
Three men between the ages of 18 and 20, who allegedly caused a disturbance at a Madison Street bar during the early morning hours of Sept. 29, were later charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor, and two of them also were charged with reckless conduct and criminal damage to property after removing two stop signs and damaging others at the intersections of Franklin and Circle, Elgin and Washington, and Elgin and Franklin.
An officer on patrol reported observing two of the men carrying stop signs and one subject jumping up and down on a downed metal stop sign pole. Two other stop sign poles were found on the ground at that intersection, removed from another location.
The same officer had been called to Doc Ryan’s on Madison Street earlier that morning and the men were asked to leave the area. They reportedly asked the officer for a ride to Concordia University, but the officer refused.
One of the men, an 18-year-old from Michigan, had his arm in a sling; he was only charged with consumption of alcohol by a minor. The two others, ages 18 and 20, both residents of Texas, were charged with damaging the stop signs and reckless conduct.
Motor vehicle theft
Forest Park police responded to Enterprise Rent-a-Car, 7600 Roosevelt Road on Sept. 29, after an employee reported that a woman, accompanied by two men, took the keys to a rental vehicle, a Dodge Ram pickup truck, and left the area. The vehicle was last seen heading north toward Roosevelt Road.
A 32-year-old Prospect Heights man called police on Sept. 26 to report that a truck that he parked in a lot in the 1300 block of Hannah Avenue within the past month had been stolen.
The victim owns a hauling company and had been having trouble finding a driver for the truck, which was being stored at the location. On Sept. 26, the victim noticed the truck was missing although he still was in possession of the keys.
Employee suspected of stealing furniture
An official at Compel LLC, 7540 Roosevelt Road, called police after learning that an employee had allegedly stolen furniture from the office while he was out of town on a business trip.
According to the police report, the employee had a U-Haul truck back up to a loading dock and had chairs and tables loaded into it. At the time the report was taken, it was unclear exactly how much furniture was missing.
The investigation continues.
Burglary
Sometime between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, someone broke out the basement window of a residence in the 1100 block of Desplaines Avenue and ransacked a bedroom, taking $300 in cash, jewelry, a watch and a phone charger. The offenders also apparently stole eight pairs of gym shoes and a mountain bike, which was taken from the garage.
Police also found a bag at the scene containing items, including discharge papers from a local hospital, which did not belong to anyone living in the residence. The papers indicated that the person was released from the hospital at 9 a.m. on Sept. 27.
Forest Park police responded to a residence in the 100 block of Brown Avenue on Sept. 28 about 4:50 p.m. after a resident called to report a garage burglary that had taken place just five minutes earlier.
The victim told police his son observed two men exiting the garage with a bicycle. The son was able to scare off the offenders, who dropped the bike. One of the offenders fled on another bike; the other fled on foot.
Inside the garage, police reportedly recovered a black BMX bike that did not belong to the homeowner. The handlebars were broken, leading police to believe they broke into the garage to steal a new bike and leave the broken one behind.
A vehicle inside the garage also appeared to have been ransacked. A pair of Allied Metal sunglasses, valued at $450, were missing from the vehicle.
A 34-year-old Forest Park man contacted police to report that someone had broken into his vehicle, which was parked in a lot in the 100 block of Circle Avenue sometime between 12:20 and 10:30 a.m. on Sept. 30.
Missing from the vehicle were a jar a loose change and a lime green lunch bag containing IDs, a pocket knife, phone chargers and $300 in cash. There were no signs of forced entry.
These items were obtained from police reports filed by the Forest Park Police Department, Sept. 25-Oct. 1, and represent a portion of the incidents to which police responded. Unless otherwise indicated, anybody named in these reports has only been charged with a crime. These cases have not been adjudicated.
