The NCAA March Madness tournament started on Tuesday, but Proviso East graduate Jevon Carter punched his ticket a long time ago.

Carter, a senior point guard for the West Virginia Mountaineers (ranked 18th in the AP Top 25 and USA Today Coaches Poll), is having a season that's only fitting for a first-round NBA draft pick in SBNation's recent mock draft.

Carter's place as the 27th pick (SBNation has him going to the Atlanta Hawks) may be theoretical, but the former Pirate's growing draft stock is very much real and the accolades flesh this out.

Earlier this month, Carter won the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Year for a second straight season. According to an article in the Charleston Gazette Mail, Carter is "the third player from a Power 5 conference to be named to his league's all-defensive team all four years of his career."

In addition, Carter was unanimously selected for first team all-defense and all-league honors. He was also named Academic All-America of the Year for Division I men's basketball.

Now Carter is a finalist up for the most prestigious awards in college basketball: the Senior Class Award (given to "the outstanding senior NCAA Division I Student-Athlete of the Year across nine different sports"), the Wooden Award (given to the most outstanding men and women college basketball players) and the Bob Cousy Award (given to the best point guard in college basketball).
